Tirtha: threshold

Tirtha is a Hindu spiritual concept and notion of threshold. Taken from ancient Indian scriptures, this Sanskrit word means a “crossing place” in the sense of “transition or junction” in a journey towards self-realisation and bliss.

This videos central moving image draws with light to record the ephemeral subject of water as it alters states resulting in an abstract subliminal landscape that is both constant and changing.

Like water (seashore, rivers, ponds) or human states of mind (truth, forgiveness), pure light mixes with liquid modulated effects to transcend the material world. Simulating spiritual energy or flow, this ritual performance sequence resonates with the acoustic sounds of a domestic bathroom.

Featured with Home Science exhibition (Malcolm Smith Gallery, Uxbridge Art + Culture Centre, Auckland) and Diwali Festival at TSB Centre, Wellington in 2018.
